Grand tasting at AsiaWorldExpo a huge success.

At the recent Wine Future (6 – 8 November 2011) summit held at AsiaWorldExpo, we saw 50 of the biggest wine personalities including Angelo Gaja, Francis Ford Copola, Robert Parker, Jancis Robinson MW, Tim Atkin MW, Lisa Perroti Brown MW, Michel Bettane, James Suklin and our very own Debra Meiburg MW, Jennie Cho Lee MW plus lots of other big names in wine come together to discuss the current hot topics in the wine world, spread across 12 panels.

With topics ranging from new wine styles, doing business and selling wines in Asia, wine marketing strategies, education solutions and Asian palates, to the use of Internet and social media in this traditional world, it was wine discussion on speed! As expected with a line-up like that, it was a smashing success and we definitely went away with a lot of insight and new ideas.

The highlight of the summit was the 3 grand tasting events held on separate days.

In Part 2 of Debra Meiburg’s guide to professional wine-tasting made easy series, we cover smelling your wine and taking the temperature of wine.

Take a whiff

Smelling your wine is much more than a feel-good exercise, it’s also a great way of gauging intensity, a lack of which suggests poor quality.

To test for this, start by holding your glass down by your tummy. Then, slowly raise it towards your mouth, stopping when you get that first whiff of aroma. If your glass ends up somewhere between your neck and the bottom of your chin, you’re probably dealing with a high-intensity wine. If it’s somewhere between your nose and the bottom of your chin, however, it’s likely of medium intensity. Anything that requires sticking your nose in the glass should be regarded as sub-par.
