HKU SPACE to represent Hong Kong in Left Bank Bordeaux Cup 2013.
Teams from Hong Kong ready against the Cup’s panel of judges
On Saturday, February 23, the Asia semi-finals of La Commanderie du Bontemps’ Left Bank Bordeaux Cup, one of the most prestigious international wine tasting competitions, took place at Grand Hyatt Hong Kong.
Six teams, represented by students from wine appreciation clubs of Hong Kong’s top universities – Chinese University of Hong Kong, University of Hong Kong, HKU School of Profession and Continuing Education (HKU SPACE), City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education, and Hong Kong University of Science & Technology – competed for the opportunity to represent the city in the finals to be held at Chateau Lafite Rothschild on June 14.

Record high sales of HK$80 million in two day wine auction.

It seems Hong Kong buyers were on a wine high last weekend as the two day Zachys took in an Asian record HK$80 million for rare, fine wines from around the globe. Not only was the exchange of cash incredible, but the amount of lots sold hit an unbelievable 96%.

Auction opening in Hong Kong sees highest value wine lot in 2011.

The autumn wine auction season has got off to a flying start in Hong Kong with a record sale so far for 2011. Sold at HK$4.2million, Lot 44 of 25 cases of vintage 1981 to 2005, a vertical tasting collection from Chateau Lafite Rothschild topped the records as the highest value wine lot sold at auction worldwide this year.

Chinese companies continue their acquisition of Bordeaux chateaux.

Given the huge interest in China for wines from Bordeaux, it’s not surprising that savvy Chinese companies have decided to go directly to the source and invest in Bordeaux, purchasing chateaux to supply the demand in China. So far, there have been five Chinese chateau purchases in Bordeaux including state-owned firms.

Sheraton’s Sky Lounge is featuring a collection of 24 second growth wines from some of the most prestigious wine estates in the world including Chateau Lafite Rothschild, Chateau Latour, Chateau Margaux, Chateau Haut-Brion, Chateau Mouton-Rotschild, Thermanthia, Dominus Estate and many more. Second wine is the term for second label wine not selected for use in the Gran Vin or first label. Though the wine is from the same winemaker, same vineyard and has gone through similar blending and processes, they’re offered at 50-70% of the price of first label.
