This May 28, 2010, the Institute will give interested students information on what’s really involved in studying towards the Master of Wine qualification.

To be considered for this exclusive education programme, applicants should already have obtained their WSET Diploma or have an equivalent wine qualification and a minimum of five years of experience within the wine trade.

The event will cover an overview of the Institute, an introduction to the theory and practical elements of the education programme and exam, and a guided tasting of wines with the Master of Wine who is hosting the event, Jeannie Cho Lee.

Independent Wine Centre (IWC) is a school set up by Simon Tam and Tersina Shieh (General Manager and Winemaker), the former being one of Hong Kong’s more prominent wine commentators and consultants who has spent 20 years in the wine and food industry passionately sharing his knowledge and experience.

JC Viens, a professionally qualified wine educator and holder of the prestigous Diploma Level 4, WSET and Bordeaux Wine School Educator, will be conducting wine workshops to help wine students understand their raison d’être from different regions.

In these workshops which will be conducted over 3 separate sessions, JC Viens will cover Argentina wines on January 31, Bordeaux wines on February 2, and Chilean wines on February 27.  The workshop format will follow an introduction to the region, climate, key grape varieties and wine-making techniques. It will also include a guided tasting of a wide range of wines from that particular region to help students develop a better understanding about the various characteristics influencing the styles of wine found in different countries.

Classes are kept small and limited to 20 people.  This is a great way for wine lovers to spend Saturday afternoon, so come along by yourself or bring a friend with you and meet fellow wine lovers.

JC Vien is a highly educated wine lover; a certified International Bordeaux Educator with the CIVB Bordeaux Wine School and graduate of the Wine & Spirit Educational Trust (WSET) Diploma course. The Lee Gardens in Causeway Bay is no longer just a place to enjoy fine wines – now, you can learn about them, too. Berry Bros. & Rudd are expanding The Fine Wine Centre to incorporate a new area, giving students more space. As part of the expansion, new instructors will be coming on board to offer all-new courses.

Located just next to their Lee Gardens wine shop, the Centre hosts tastings, tutorials, Masterclasses and many different courses to help further wine education. The course list offers regional study, including the L’Ecole du Vin de Bordeaux Series. The Fine Wine Centre explores wine at every stage – from soil growth to grape type, to winemaking techniques and tasting.

Ron Taylor and Jean-Charles Viens will join the prestigious instructors currently teaching at the facility, which officially opened in January 2008. Ron Taylor spent 10 of his 30-year wine and spirits career as a lecturer. He’s a certified WSET tutor, a member of the Association of Wine Educators, an associate of the Institute of Wine and Spirits (AIWS) and a member of the Society of Wine Educators and the Hong Kong Wine Society. He continues to lecture part-time at LiPACE Hong Kong Open University.

Jean-Charles Viens has been to vineyards on five continents, a certified Bordeaux Wine School educator who’s studied every aspect of wine and wine-making.

Anthony Petit, a France native now living in Hong Kong, has a mind-blazing world of French wines to show you.

He is presently devoting his time to the development of the Wine Education Center and is a part-time wine instructor at Hong Kong University Space.

The course is focused on casual learning – you won’t find an angry Frenchman throwing fits but a refined gentleman teaching you the arts and crafts that you seek. The course focuses on learning the fundamentals of french wine in a french way. There will be formal wine tastings with French descriptions and 3 wines will be served.

The meeting time will be on September 22nd from 7pm-10pm (3 hour workshop) at the Admiralty Learning Centre. The language will be English and the Fee is HK$450. If you’d like an application (or have any other questions), then click here.

Anthony earned his first degree in wine studies in Bordeaux where he was also a member of the student wine association. He often organized wine tours in the Bordeaux Region and learned vast amounts from the local producers. Later he was sent to Hong Kong where he further pursued his wine studies. In 2008, he set up his own business in Hong Kong offering customized tours in France and particularly the wine regions.

The Independent Wine Centre (IWC), a Hong Kong based wine consultancy and eduction centre, is hosting two fabulous wine tasting courses in August on the 19th and 26th.

The Hong Kong Management Association (HKMA) has partnered with The Bordeaux Wine School to provide specialized training on the art of choosing and tasting Bordeaux wines. For those looking to join the wine and spirit trade, or even wine enthusiasts who wish to acquire more advanced  knowledge of wine, the Hong Kong Open University now offers a “Foundation Course in Wine Tasting” course.

Operated in collaboration with Concord Institute of Wine, the course teaches a basic understanding of wine by styles; the service of wines; how to prepare a portfolio of tasting notes as well as knowledge of matching food and wine.
