Sotheby’s hits big numbers in auction sales over the weekend in Hong Kong.
Sotheby’s first wine auction of 2010 at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel on 23 January 2010 fetched a record-breaking HK$52,921,770 or USD 6, 784, 842 – well above expectations. The 10 hour auction saw buyers from Hong Kong, Mainland China and all over Asia bidding for 840 lots. This auction represents Sotheby’s highest total sales for a single day wine sale, with a 100% sell through.
It was interesting to see the trend of online bidders gaining significance, with 66% of the lots sold to online bidders not in attendance. Sotheby’s also reports that top lots were sold to private collectors and connoisseurs from Hong Kong, Mainland China and Taiwan.
Lots that fetched the highest prices were:
- Lot 474 Château Pétrus 2000, 12 bottles which sold for HK$411,400
- Lot 467 Château Pétrus 2005, 12 bottles which sold for HK$387,200
- Lot 506 Château Pétrus 506, 3 mags which sold for hK$363,000
- Lot 81, Château Lafite 1982, 1 imperial, 6 liter bottles achieved sale of HK$363,000
- Lot 153, Château Latour 1961, 1 jero-4.5 liter bottles sold for HK$338,800

Okay we admit, we’re a little late on this one.
Bonhams auction house can be credited for being the first in Asia to hold a whisky auction. Held on November 27, 2009, the auction sold 100% of their lots with a total sale of HK$609,990. Bonham offered over 150 lots from the Willard S.Folsom Collection of Old and Rare Whiskies consisting of single malt whiskies. Colin Sheaf, Chairman of Bonhams Asia, says that; “the international favourites such as Bowmore, Macallan and Glenfiddich dominated our top 10 list just as they would in London and New York, with collectors willing to pay the 100% duty to secure fine and rare vintages.”

Next big wine auction is set for January 23, 2010.
Sotheby’s will have the honor of hosting the first wine auction of the New Year, which will take place at the Mandarin Oriental in Hong Kong. It will be the fourth installment in the Classic Cellar from A Great American Collection wine auction series. The auction takes place January 23rd.
The event will offer the most valuable wine collection ever provided by Sotheby’s, which includes 840 lots worth HK$28.5 to $40.8 million. Haut Brion 1998, Leoville Lascases 1996 and Lynch Bages 2000 will be offered to participants – bottles which come straight from the Classic Cellar.
Bordeaux Chateaux bottles include 59 lots of Chateau Petrus, 80 lots of Chateau Lafite, 65 lots from Chateau Latour and 78 lots of chateau Margaux. To register for online bidding on auction items, click here.

Simultaneous wine auctions in Hong Kong and the U.S. brings in a nice sum.
New auction house, Spectrum, held its wine auction last weekend in Dana Point in the US as well as in and Hong Kong, so it seems you don’t need to be a Christie’s or a Sotheby’s to bring in the big bids!
The auctions were held simultaneously at Crown Wine Cellars in Hong Kong and the St. Regis Monarch Beach in Dana Point, California. By the time the hammer came down for the last time late in the Hong Kong afternoon and in the wee hours of the following morning in the US, 686 lots and $HKD26,775,869.60 ($US3,454,944) in fine and collectible wines had changed hands, with 100% of lots sold.
Capacity crowds gathered in the two live auction venues, and telephone and online bidders from around the world joined in on the action. Case quantities of Burgundies and Bordeaux claimed many of the top spots in the auction, with the strongest showings coming from the top French estates. The top lots sold are as follows:
