Weekly Varietal: Riesling From Mosel, Germany

Friday. 2 March. 2012. 10:30 am

Guide to drinking Riesling from Mosel.

Riesling is the generally considered the third highest quality wine varietal (after Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc), however it has a much smaller fan base due to its unique style and semi-sweet characteristics. Although fewer fans in number, Riesling has loyal fans and is a favorite among many wine critics including Jancis Robinson.

Originating from the Rhine region in Germany, this country champions Riesling as its signature varietal, especially the Rieslings from the highly regarded wine region of Mosel.

Thought to be one of the most terroir expressive white wines, Rieslings strongly reflect the land that they were grown in and the steep hillsides at Mosel produce a crisp Riesling with refreshing acidity. In young Rieslings you can detect very individual aromas and the bouquet is perfumed with fruit and mineral characteristics. As you age a Riesling, typically for around 10 years, the flavors harmonize and the wine becomes more balanced. A light and refreshing wine, it is typically low in alcohol and is great paired with lighter dishes or try a sweeter style Riesling with spicy food for an interesting match.
