Royal Oak’s Vintage 2010 En Premieur Tasting in Hong Kong

Friday. 15 July. 2011. 10:19 am

Royal Oak brings the best Bordeaux for 2013 to Hong Kong now.

Royal Oak Asia established in Hong Kong as a Joint Venture company with Tokuoka, one of Japan’s biggest Asia fine wine importers with more than 140 years in the wine industry.

Now they are bringing a wide variety of wines from different parts of the world to China, Hong Kong and Macau. With extensive experience in fine wine trading, Royal Oak is sourcing the best wines all around the world and directly imported to our shop in Tsim Sha Tsui.

This past weekend Royal Oak held their first Vintage 2010 En Premieur Tasting at the Grand Hyatt and we were there.

Royal Oak brought the bad boy of Bordeaux with them: Mr. Jean-Luc Thunevin and Chateau Valandraud.

Mr. Thunevin is regarded as the godfather of the garagiste movement. He became the inspiration and initiator of many other garage wines around Bordeaux and around the world. All these micro cuvees, work on their vineyard to lower the yields and produce the ripest fruits possible. His wife Murielle personally supervises the care of the vineyards: pruning adapted to each vine, systematic thinning, and green harvest to purposely limit the number of bunches on the vine.

Chateau Valandraud currently extends 4.5 hectares (11 acres), with the grape varieties composed of 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. The annual production of the Grand Vin is typically 15,000 to 20,000 bottles.

The Vintage 2010 En Primeur Tasting at the Grand Hyatt brought a huge crowd that was interested in being the first in Hong Kong to taste the 2010 vintage that won’t be available to them until 2013.

Most of the En Primeur wines were already scored by Robert Parker all in the very high numbers like the 1st Growth in Medoc Chateau Laifite Rothschild and the Chateau Moutin which both scored 98-100 and 97-100 point by Mr, Parker respectively with the price per bottle per case ranging from 780 Euros (HK$8,600) to 1,200 Euros (HK$13,230).

These “wine futures” are becoming very big business but you usually have to fly to France to try them – so to allow Hong Kong and Mainland China wine lovers get a taste without the travel – Royal Oak had about a dozen bottles of each of the 2010 En Primeur sent in from France to taste as well as En Primeur seminars held by Royal Oak president River Wong, Chateau Lascombes’ Delphine Barboux and Mr. Thunevin so that buyers could familiarize themselves with buying patterns and future pricing.

We’ll have more photos and video insight into this event coming to you next week. In the meantime if you are in Tsim Sha Tsui have a visit of the Royal Oak shop and stop by for one of their daily tastings and join them on Facebook.
