New record high wine fetched at Christie’s auction. At the Christie’s Hong Kong Finest & Rarest Wine auction held over the weekend on 4 and 5 March 2011, a total of HK$77,206,800 was achieved.  Interesting the top lot sold was not from Bordeaux but was from Burgundy. The 6 magnum bottles of La Tache, Vintage 1961 which sold for HK$720,000. This shows signs that the market is maturing slightly and starting to shift away from just Bordeaux Grands Crus. However the majority of the sales was still Bordeaux wines. Charles Curtis, MW, Head of Wine for Christie’s Asia, commented, “On the second day of our sale, we sold large quantities of young Bordeaux at very strong prices, demonstrating the continued strength of the market, particularly the wines of Château Mouton-Rothschild, which sold above high estimates in many cases, especially the 1990 and 2000 vintages, and Lafite, which maintained its continued popularity”.  The results also demonstrate a trend for buying older vintages and larger formats.   Top lots sold:

  • 12 bottles of Petrus, 1982 sold for HK$648,000
