Spotlight Vineyard: Chateau Peyrabon, Medoc
An uniquely located vineyard between the appellations of Haut-Medoc and Pauillac.
Chateau Peyrabon is a small and established property in Haut Medoc originally bought by the Babeau family when they expanded the vineyard from neigbouring Chateau Liversan. In 1998, Peyrabon was purchased by Millesima’s MD Patrick Bernard who has since modernized the property. Chateau Peyrabon produces three wines – Chateau la Fleur de Peyrabon AOC Pauillac, Cru Bourgeois (one of only 7 Crus Bourgeois wines in Pauillac), Château Peyrabon AOC Haut Médoc, Cru Bourgeois and Château Pierbone AOC Haut Médoc (second wine of Château Peyrabon).
What makes the 57 hectares of Chateau Peyrabon unique is that the vineyards are divided between the appellations of Haut-Medoc and Pauillac. The Haut-Médoc vineyard is larger and comprises 50 hectares while the remaining 7 hectares are AOC Pauillac. In 2005, the Chateau expanded with the purchase of 2 hectares of land located between Château Lafite-Rothschild and Château Mouton-Rothschild at the locality of La Lande de Berret.
As with the majority of Left Bank wines, Cabernet Sauvignon is the dominant grape variety in the Château Peyrabon wines. The vineyard’s planting is 62% Cabernet Sauvignon 31% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot. The picking for La Fleur is entirely by hand and the maturation takes place in oak barrels for an average of 14 months. Their Chateau Le Fleur Peyrabon wines have won awards in France, Germany and the UK. To find out more, go to www.chateaupeyrabon.com or Millesima.com
